Good news everyone, I’m alive.
You may have noticed this email coming on a Tuesday instead of Wednesday. I’m still getting used to keeping this schedule (it’s only 6 days late). I’ve been preparing for this workshop series Noun Project puts on called Iconathons. It’s a wonderful series where we partner with the community to create iconography for ideas that are under represented. This time we are making icons to represent women in professional life.
We had our first one in San Fransisco this weekend, and it was a huge success. Some of the nicest people attended and the icons that came out of the workshop were superb. I can’t wait to share more of this with you as we do more of these. This weekend we have one in Los Angeles, and April 20th we have one in New York. I highly encourage you to come out if you are available.
Fits and Bits
I haven’t been sleeping very well lately. I think it’s a mixture of stress and anxiety, but regardless I know I need to improve my sleeping habits. Because of that, I picked up a Fitbit. I’ve always been really interested in tracking things, but I don’t really consider myself someone who wants to wear this type of device all the time. I don’t have expensive or fancy watches, but I do love my analog MUJI watch that I wear literally everyday on my left wrist. On my right now lives my Fitbit Charge 3. So far I don’t really notice it, except for the fact I have a black band on both my wrists now… kinda weird. I’ve ordered a brown leather band for my Fitbit to hopefully make it not feel so strange.
It’s been 1 week and I’ve noticed lots of changes in my habits. I now log all my food which makes me consider having a second cookie. I track my water intake which has made me stop and hydrate MUCH more often. I get a little buzz if I’ve been stagnant for more than 45 minutes, which has given me reason to get up and stretch regularly. I get really excited to take the stairs and take the long way to coffee. I have received encouragement through the app from my mom, who has a Fitbit and noticed my step count was really great. And most importantly I’ve been seeing the exact number of minutes I sleep. This has made me turn in earlier than I ever would have before, and realize that 3 hours 36 minutes is NOT enough sleep. As time will go on I will hopefully make more permanent habits from this data, but honestly it’s some of the best money I’ve ever spent.
Get some Tranquility
A while ago I created this enamel pin. I was struggling with getting useful notifications on my phone and computer so much that I just silenced EVERYTHING. It’s a shame that we let the world steal our attention for mostly frivolous things. I then went and found the two or three things that I wanted reminders or notifications about and enabled those. This spurred me to think about a phone app icon that had a notification bubble of zero. And thus this beautiful little pin. I get comments on it everywhere I go, and even gave one to Jeff Goldblum when I met him at one of his jazz shows.
I think it’s really great, but I keep getting distracted from promoting it. I even made a mini web game that is actually kind of fun. So if you also think it’s cool, and wanna wear one to proudly show you’re in control of who gets your attention, you can buy one from me. 0️⃣
Thanks for bearing with me, I wholly intend to send another good news tomorrow.
